ABOUT THE BLACK SOLDIER FLY (BSF) & WHY IT’S USEFUL FOR FARMERS!

BSF is found on all continents, but it especially flourishes in tropical regions, and tends to be abundant in agricultural areas, which is where organic wastes it needs to lay eggs in are most readily found.

It Causes No Known Problems to Man

Even though it looks like a wasp, BSF is actually totally harmless. The adult fly has no mouth and therefore does not bite or sting. Neither does it carry any known diseases. And it’s not attracted to places humans live or store foods – so it’s not a nuisance.

Provides a Rich Source of Proteins

Black Soldier Fly Larva (BSFL) are loaded with a rich variety of essential nutrients e.g. proteins (up to 50%), calcium, phosphorus, and amino acids. As a result, they are widely used as a protein source in feeding fish and livestock by farmers.

A Sustainable LIVE Protein Source

BSFL are very versatile eaters, which makes them quite sustainable as a LIVE protein source. Also, because they consume organic waste, they offer an environmentally friendly alternative to fish meal which is obtained via over-fishing in the wild.

1. What is dried black soldier fly larvae used for?

Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) are considered the best new alternative for incorporating calcium and protein into an animal’s diet. BSFL is widely
used to feed poultry and pigs.

2. Is BSFL good for Fish or Poultry?

BSFL is an alternative feed ingredient that meets nutrient requirements as a protein source. Apart from being used in feed formulation/production, BSFL can also be fed directly to fish, and even poultry.

3. How long will dry BSFL last in store?

Dried BSFL has a 3-4 month shelf life in comparison to 3-4 weeks for live BSFL. Dried BSFL is best stored in a cool and dry space for optimal shelf-life. Its dry nature prevents mold or bacterial growth in it.

A Waste Converting Life Cycle

This amazing insect has a unique life cycle that sees it feed on a wide variety of organic wastes as larvae with voracious appetites which grow into pupa, then adult flies, which lay eggs that hatch into larvae again.

4 Main Stages in the life cycle

  • Egg Stage: 4 days | Eggs hatch into larvae
  • Larval Stage: < 2 wks. Feed, grow & molt
  • Pupae Stage: 2-3 wks. Stop feeding & pupate
  • Adult Stage: 5-9 days. Mate, Lay eggs & die

Black Soldier Fly Larvae can surprise. (It) is the ideal of sustainability. A fascinating insect that eats everything it comes across. They’re perfect machines that can eat every crumb of our food scraps. Our waste is food for them; they are not picky and will eat all plant and animal waste. This way, we can quickly transform our scraps into a new food source. Moreover, their breeding is easy – it is not so much work. Just a practical and efficient invertebrate.”
